TORRANCE, California — The 2012 Honda Accord is basically in a holding pattern for the new model year, as the Japanese automaker avoids price increases and major changes on its mainstay sedan and coupe. The 2012 Accord is on sale now.

Prices remain at 2011 levels for the 2012 Honda Accord coupe and sedan.

The base 2012 Honda Accord LX sedan starts at $22,150, including a $770 destination charge, the same as the outgoing model. The base 2012 Honda Accord LX-S coupe starts at $23,750, including a $770 destination charge, the same as the outgoing model.

Honda has held the line on pricing throughout much of the Accord lineup, with prices remaining the same as the 2011 model on the 2012 Accord EX, EX V-6 and EX-L V6 sedans.

"The 2012 lineup, features and specifications remain similar to the 2011 model year when the Accord received upgrades for fuel economy and styling," said Honda in a statement on Wednesday.

Four engine variations are available on the 2012 Accord, including the base 177-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine to the top-of-the-line 271-hp 3.5-liter V6.

Inside Line says: No major upgrades for the 2012 Honda Accord — and no big price hike, either.

They have to hold the prices firm there are really no changes and they have left it alone too long and every one passed them by.  Yes it is reliable but so is my toaster and just as much fun to drive....boring.  No wonder Honda is loosing market share here.

The local  Ford dealer is advertising brand-new 2012 Fusions for only $18,500!  Sorry, Honda, I'd take a Fusion or Avenger or Malibu or Altima or (base model, $18999) Kizashi over an Accord.

Two key reasons why the prices aren't changing:

    1)  This is the 5th production year for this design, so the R&D costs have already been recouped.
    2)  Since this is the 5th production year for this design, the price needs to hold steady to maintain as much market share relative to the newer designs from competitors.

There are 2 variations of the 3.5L V6. One variation is paired with the 5sp auto w/ VCM (Variable Cylinder Management) standard on the V6 sedan and coupe, while the other one is paired with the available close-ratio 6sp manual without VCM exclusive to the V6 coupe. This variation has a performance-tuned valvetrain, intake and exhaust systems to further broaden the torque curve in the low- to mid-rpm range.

Mushroom, I think they mean engine/tranny variations.  All 3 of those engines come with autos, and one  can be had with a stick (I think the crappiest one).

    4 engine choices?  The base 177 horsepower 2.4, 190+ horsepower 2.4, and the 3.5 V6... What's the 4th choice?

Pedestrian is apparently what most car buyers want.  But even if it jumped a thousand dollars, it would still be competitive.  The Accord is not all that expensive.  (Malibus, and perhaps Fusions, are a bit cheaper due to incentives.  The Accord doesn't need incentives.)

Good thing, since the Legacy, Sonata/Optima, Malibu, and Fusion all start just under 20K.
