2008 Paris Auto Show Preview: Honda Planning Trio of Debuts

PARIS — Honda will set its restyled Jazz and refreshed Civic Hybrid alongside its eagerly awaited Insight Concept at the 2008 Paris Auto Show next month. The automaker is presenting the European debut of the new Jazz five-door hatchback (known in the U.S. as the Fit) and the world debut of the Civic Hybrid. Also on the menu is the debut of a new automatic gearbox for the i-DTEC diesel engine and a CR-Z sports concept car.

Honda's all-new Jazz hatchback is notable for its two new i-VTEC engines with improved fuel economy and lower emissions. The car should be attractive, Honda says, to buyers "looking to downsize to a more efficient vehicle."

Honda gave information about the Insight last week, saying it will be on sale in the U.S. next spring and priced lower than the Toyota Prius. Honda released images of the concept, saying it will be "the start of a new phase of Honda's hybrid strategy." That involves an additional two hybrid vehicles planned to roll out between now and 2010, Honda said.

The automaker is also introducing a new automatic gearbox for its 2.2-liter i-DTEC turbodiesel engine, which it says was developed in response to demand from European customers.

Last but not least will be Honda's CR-Z Hybrid Sports Concept, a 2+2 car intended to make hybrid vehicles attractive to a wider audience. The car will spawn a new small coupe hybrid in the future Honda lineup.

What this means to you: Honda looks to snap up interest — and market share — among small- and hybrid-car buyers in Europe. — Laura Sky Brown, Correspondent
