Melbourne Auto Show: Holden HSV Unveils W427 Supercar

MELBOURNE, Australia — Australia's GM unit, Holden, unveiled the W427 at the Melbourne auto show, saying it could be the fastest car ever made in Australia. The supercar concept is planned to go into production for an autumn on-sale date and will likely be priced above $150,000.

The Commodore-based sedan has a 7.0-liter HSV-calibrated version of the Chevrolet Corvette LS7 V8 engine. It makes an estimated 496 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque and will take the W427 from zero to 60 mph in less than 4.7 seconds. Scott Grant, HSV managing director, said it will be "quite possibly the fastest road-registrable (sic) supercar ever produced in Australia."

He also says it'll be one of the safest, with a new six-piston front brake system, revised ESP calibration, six airbags and new Magnetic Ride Control settings.

The W427 also has 20-inch wheels, a three-piece carbon-fiber rear spoiler, an 0.8-inch-lower suspension than the Commodore on which it's based, and stiffer springs.

The W427 pays homage to HSV's original Group A SS VL Commodore, which debuted 20 years ago at the Melbourne auto show. It's even painted in the same color, Panorama Silver.

Full imagery on the supercar may be ogled at the HSV W427 Web site.
