2008 Beijing Auto Show: Great Wall Gwkulla

BEIJING — Great Wall Motor, the pickup and SUV specialist based in northern China, has produced some wacky designs with some wacky names — none more so than the idiosyncratic Gwkulla, on display at the 2008 Beijing Auto Show.

The introduction of the tiny, battery-powered two-seater, however, suggests an intriguing direction for the company, which is in the process of a major expansion of its production capacity in Baoding.

The Kulla ("wizard") features an advanced lithium-ion battery pack and a 48v DC motor that produces 67 horsepower. On a single charge, the car has a range of up to 112 miles and can be quick-charged to 70 percent of capacity in 10 minutes, according to the company. A full charge takes five to six hours.

The Kulla measures less than 120 inches long and weighs a mere 1,100 pounds.

What this means to you: The hardware may be high tech, but the styling seems to be inspired by the Citroën 2CV. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
