SHANGHAI, China — Great Wall Motor has made a name for itself so far in China and certain overseas markets as a purveyor of low-priced trucks and SUVs. Last year, the Baoding-based company began stepping away from its core products with such wonderfully named concepts as the Florid, the Cool Bear and the Gwkulla. At the 2009 Shanghai Auto Show, Great Wall hopes to demonstrate a new maturity, with the more prosaically christened CHC011 sedan.
The styling borders on over-the-top, particularly the jumble of clashing grilles in front and the oversize T-shaped taillamps in the rear.
The midsize four-door, seen here in unofficial photos leaked on various Chinese Web sites, is said to share its 3.0-liter V6 and six-speed automatic transmission with the new Hover H7 crossover vehicle.
Included in the amenities on the CHC011 are adaptive cruise control, stability control, antilock brakes and eight airbags, as well as a VIP-style rear seating area with separate console controls.
Great Wall is expected to announce production plans at the Shanghai show.
