    What is it?
2001 GMC Yukon Denali &Yukon XL Denali

    What's special about it?
When GMC introduced the Denali variant of the Yukon in 1998, the model established GMC as a worthy player in the ever-increasing full-size SUV segment. And for 2001, the Denali receives a makeover, with what GMC execs call a combination of 3 A's -- agility, attitude and amenities.

Both the Denali and the long-wheelbase Denali XL receive a 325-horsepower Vortec 6000 V8 mated to an enhanced electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission and a new full-time, all-wheel-drive system, splitting power 38 percent to the front wheels and 62 percent to the rears. A viscous-type coupling sends power to the axles with the most grip during wheelspin.

Four-wheel ABS-assisted discs with dynamic brake proportioning provide stopping power and speed-dependent, variable-effort steering help navigate the Denali in mall parking lots.

The new Denalis features the Z55 Autoride suspension system that uses an electronic controller to scrutinize shock absorber movement 1,000 times per second and changing damping to suit road conditions. The self-leveling rear shocks help to keep the Denali level when carrying large payloads or towing a trailer.

"Industrial" would be a good way to describe the new exterior design of the Denali. With its polished front grille, body-contoured headlamps and low front fascia with integral fog lamps, the Denali possesses an unmistakable signature. The industrial theme is continued with a monochromatic look and brushed stainless-steel exhaust outlet.

Building on the first-generation interior, the 2001 Denali adds features and refinements that are unique to the truck-based SUV segment. They include tone-on-tone leather seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio controls, third-row seating, a dash-installed six-disc CD changer, black cherry woodgrain inserts, heated front and second-row seats, a three-channel HomeLink transmitter and the OnStar communications system.

    Why should you care?
With the full-size SUV segment becoming more and more saturated with GM products (Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Yukon XL, Yukon Denali, Yukon XL Denali and the Escalade), GMC had to take action to differentiate the Denali nameplate from all the other SUVs on the market - including the likes of the Ford Expedition and the Lincoln Navigator. Pricing was not released, but expect a hike over last year's model. The new Denalis will hit the dealer showrooms this fall.
