GMC Terradyne
What's special about it?
The GMC Terradyne is a concept pickup truck featuring both aggressive styling and innovative features. The cab is moved up 2 inches and forward 7 inches (relative to current pickups). This design creates additional interior space without adding overall length. As such, GMC says the Terradyne can carry fit five passengers as comfortably as an SUV. The extra cab height also improves driver visibility. The cargo box is normally 6 feet in length. However, a special powered extendable tailgate (it basically works like a drawer) can be extended to create an additional 2 feet of cargo box. The four cabin doors open like the rear doors found on many minivans, sliding out and then parallel to the side of the vehicle. The interior styling and materials (both leather and stainless steel) reflect the truck's dual purpose: family transportation and jobsite workhorse. Other Terradyne features include a rear-view camera system, a 5000-watt on-board generator, four-wheel steering, xenon driving lights, power-extendable side mirrors, and storage bins in the sides of the cargo bed.
Why should I care?
Penning an aggressive-looking concept truck isn't too hard. But taking that same truck and giving it a truly innovative and useful design -- that's truly impressive. Nearly all of the features found on the Terradyne would be welcome on current pickups. In fact, the new Duramax diesel 6.6-liter V8 powering the Terradyne will be available as optional equipment on 2001 GMC Sierra 2500HD/3500 pickups. All of this, plus big-and-bad macho truck styling. What more could you want?
