February 7, 1998 -- In the high stakes game of trucks, GMC played its wild card at the Chicago Auto Show Thursday when executives introduced the Sierra Deuce, a concept sportside pickup meant to appeal to traditional truck users with a wild side.
Deuce stands for Design-Unique Coupe Expression -- an acronym that expresses the rugged but spirited future of the GMC truck lineup, according to executives.
The electric red truck did look like a beefy, sporty package when it rolled onto the stage at McCormick Place. Powered by the new Vortec 5.3-liter V-8 engine, it generates 265 horsepower at 5000 rpm and 320 pound-feet of torque at 2800 rpm.
Engineers created a new headlamp system that adds 30 percent more forward light, 120 percent more left-hand driving light and 25 percent more high-beam illumination than the previous generation Sierras-without increasing the amount of energy used or the glare to oncoming traffic.
On the exterior, consumers will find dual exhaust tips, chrome-plated tow hooks and a wider grille with louvers to increase underhood airflow. Eighteen-inch chrome-plated six spoke wheels and 285/60R18 Michelin tires grip the road on this show truck.
Interior enhancements include an electronic odometer, a Tow/Haul mode selection button, seat-mounted lap and shoulder belts and suede-accented seats. The Deuce also offers more room than current Sierras, with 1.3 inches more hip room and a front seat track that is 34 percent longer than current GMC trucks.
With these and other improvements, GMC is sure to gamble on the Deuce's success in the full-size truck market if and when it becomes a reality.
