GM says the Sierra Hybrid boasts a 40 percent improvement in city fuel economy and a 25 percent increase in overall mileage, while still providing a towing capacity of 6,100 pounds.
The heart of the two-mode hybrid system is GM's big 6.0-liter V8, which is also featured in the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon Hybrids. Cylinder deactivation permits the engine to run on only four cylinders to save fuel under part throttle.
The Sierra Hybrid has a cruising range of more than 500 miles and can run up to 30 mph in all-electric mode.
GMC will offer the Sierra Hybrid initially as a crew cab only, in both two- and four-wheel-drive versions, with such standard features as stability control, 18-inch wheels and tires, a locking rear axle and a trailering package. The truck goes on sale in late 2008.
