2008 Geneva Auto Show Preview: Giugiaro Quaranta and Pininfarina Sintesi

GENEVA — It used to be that the trio of fabled Italian carrozzerie — Pininfarina, Bertone and Italdesign — anchored the annual Geneva auto show, dazzling visitors with exotic, cutting-edge concepts.

The 2008 Geneva Auto Show as something of a different twist, with Italdesign and Pininfarina both planning to unveil sexy new prototypes while Bertone struggles to stave off bankruptcy and find a new owner.

While it now appears that Bertone may not bring its rumored Alfa-based B.A.T. 11 concept o the show after all, Pininfarina continues to tease its Sintesi concept (revealing few additional details), and Italdesign is finally showing more skin — on its Quaranta concept.

The Quaranta — the Italian name denotes the firm's 40th anniversary — is expected to show off the House of Giugiaro's latest thinking on green technology. So far, the company has only hinted at the Quaranta's power plant, with the slogan, "Nature has never been so powerful." More details will be revealed next week at the car's official unveiling.

What this means to you: Pininfarina and Giugiaro continue to pursue totally different design philosophies, as embodied in their latest concepts for Geneva. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
