BEIJING, China — Geely was conspicuous in its absence from the last Beijing auto show in 2006. Perhaps company Chairman Li Shufu is overcompensating for the upcoming 2008 Beijing Auto Show, with plans to unveil at least eight new concept and production vehicles, including an update of the compact Vision sedan and the launch of an even larger midsize sedan.

Code-named FC-3, the compact four-door is headed for production later this year, along with a hatchback variant code-named FC-2. Geely has said it intends to export both models to Europe in 2009 — and may also send the sedan to North America.

A larger sedan, code-named GC, is also under development. Few details have emerged, but the GC appears to be about the size of the Honda Accord and also is aimed at export markets. Production is slated to begin in 2009.

Both the FC and GC models will be powered by Geely four-cylinder gas and diesel engines. The company says the cars are being designed to meet the latest safety and emissions standards in Europe and North America.

What this means to you: Look for one or both Geely sedans in a U.S. showroom around 2010. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
