    Just the Facts:
    • Ford unveiled its new Police Interceptor sedan today.
    • The new police car is based on the Taurus, and replaces the Crown Victoria.
    • Two engine options: 263-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 or 365-hp 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6.

LAS VEGAS — Ford, the master of the universe when it comes to the law-enforcement vehicle segment, took the wraps off its new Police Interceptor sedan on Friday. It said the new cop car will be "offered without interruption when production of the Ford Crown Victoria ends in late 2011."

Ford also said it will provide a second model, a "utility vehicle that will be pursuit-rated to complement the sedan." The second vehicle will be revealed in the third quarter of 2010, Ford noted.

Details of the new Ford Police Interceptor include a virtual ground-up redesign of the cabin, including such touches as "anti-stab plates" built into the front seatbacks. Ford said in a statement that these are "designed to protect front-seat occupants." The front seats have also been redesigned to accommodate the belts with holsters worn by officers.

The Interceptor sedan comes with two powertrain options, a 263-hp 3.5-liter V6 and a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 with all-wheel drive that churns out 365 hp. The engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

All of you who are dogging out the tauras must not have seen the test and don't know anything about rrwd or fwd, this cars got a body like a bull, just like the crown vic,it can handle anything, and the engine don't even  get me started with the twin turbo charged engine 365 horsepower which nither the charger or caprice could handle. they're all tag alongs. fords been the owner of the game and it will stay that way.it's built ford tough and the cops like it that way it's a badass car and everyone knows it so look out haters here comes ford.

"This vehicle is pursuit-ready,"  "It's no nonsense, through and through."  However, pricing at this time may be the major issue with the new Ford, as there are two other game players that are in high pursuit of the quest for the best in this market...

I have a really hard time buying the idea that contemporary RWD police vehicles are great handling vehicles. If it's a major concern, perhaps Edmunds could run the top 3 vehicles around a track and determine exactly what the differences are. There are some fine handling FWD vehicles out there as well (VW GTI, Mazda 3, etc.) There are advantages on the high end of handling for RWD and AWD, but for most car categories, the implementation is more important than the architecture.

Well, the thing this new Ford will Still have over the Charger is the Body on Frame Condtruction that Police Departments LOVE!!!

I agree, it ought to be RWD, but if the cops want RWD, then they'll buy RWD.

The Ecoboost is a great add.

Looks like the Charger will be gaining some sales.

I like the way it looks, but that's not the point.  As m1tankr said, the FWD-based AWD could end up being an issue. Ford claims they've tested this thing hitting curbs at 40mph and taken all kinds of measures to make the car durable enough for the rigors of police work.  I'm just not sold, dude.  I think RWD just makes more sense especially where sharp handling maneuvers are needed.  I've always argued that the new Taurus should have been more like the Interceptor Concept car as far as being RWD and having a V8. I do like the Ecoboost V6, but...ugh...this just bugs me.  For the time being, I'm not sure why police officers would want to trade up their Chargers and Magnums for a Taurus, but time will tell what happens for sure.

The people here who are acting like cops need high-powered vehicles to catch criminals crack me up.  There isn't a car out there that will outrun a Motorola!

I like this vehicle and its purposes a lot.  You can see the departments ordering the 3.5L V6 for the common vehicles that do investigative work and handing out tickets, and then the full-on 365 hp Ecoboost 3.5L V6 vehicles for those officers that need a pursuit vehicle.

I like, I like. Police departments nationwide will finally be upping their game. Time for me to do the same...
