Ford Shelby GR-1 Concept
What's Special About It?
Ford has found a possible successor to the GT in the Shelby GR-1 Concept. Utilizing a modified version of the GT's mid-engine platform, the GR-1 concept features a front-mounted 6.4-liter V10 that's good for 605 horsepower and 501 pound-feet of torque. Hooked to a rear-mounted six-speed transaxle, borrowed directly from the Ford GT, the GR-1 concept should hit 60 mph in under 4 seconds and have a top speed over 200 mph.
The GR-1's doors open in butterfly style (à la Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren) to enhance this concept's exotic car pedigree. The upscale interior design elements include a combination of brushed metal and leather materials as well as a high-tech instrument cluster with a large analog tachometer. Toggle switches for the fuel pump, ignition system and power windows are mounted in the center console. A push-button engine starter and G-force meter further add to the car's racing theme.
Riding on 19-inch wheels and a double-wishbone suspension, the GR-1 is a fully functional concept car that Ford's J. Mays says is "capable of triple-digit speeds." While not officially committing to its production car status, Ford describes the GR-1 as a "concept that hints at Ford's performance car future."
What's Edmunds' Take?
With the time and money spent developing the GT, it's logical to assume Ford would want to do more with the platform. While lacking the GT's rich heritage, the GR-1 looks capable of maintaining Ford's newfound interest in producing high-end sports cars. I sense an updated Super Bowl commercial in the making. — Karl Brauer
