SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — Carroll Shelby trumped Elvis Presley and Lee Iacocca at the 2009 Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas auction, as results from the October event were released by the auction house. A rare 1965 289 Shelby Cobra Roadster commanded top dollar, selling for $440,000. The No. 5 Iacocca Silver 45th Anniversary Edition Ford Mustang came in at No. 2, fetching $352,000. The racing car used in the 1964 film Viva Las Vegas, the 1961 Ol' Yaller VIII, wasn't even in the top 10, selling for just $198,000.

A 1967 Shelby GT500 SE Super Snake brought in $330,000, while a 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake Prudhomme Edition fetched $302,500, Barrett-Jackson said in a statement. Bidders worldwide generated more than $23 million in sales on more than 400 collector cars, the auction house said.

"Perhaps the biggest surprise was the sale of a 1963 Ford Galaxie four-door sedan created for one of the nation's leading Barney Fife impersonators, which sold for $121,000," said Barrett-Jackson. Barney Fife was the king of the panic attack in his role as deputy sheriff in Mayberry, North Carolina, on the 1960s TV series The Andy Griffith Show.

One of the highlights of this Barrett-Jackson auction was the appearance of Dukes of Hazzard star John Schneider, who jumped on the hood of "Bo's General Lee," a 1969 Dodge Charger, and sang the show's theme song. The car sold for $258,500.

Inside Line says: Celebrities continue to jump-start the Barrett-Jackson auctions. Undoubtedly we'll see more of the same next year. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
