    Just the Facts:
    • Ford claims the 2013 Shelby GT500's 650-horsepower supercharged 5.8-liter is "the most powerful production V8 engine in the world."
    • Top speed is more than 200 mph.
    • The 2013 Shelby GT500 goes on sale next year.

LOS ANGELES — The 2013 Ford Shelby GT500, which goes on sale next year, sports a supercharged 5.8-liter V8 and a new optional Performance package. Ford says the aluminum engine, which is rated at 650 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque, is "the most powerful production V8 engine in the world." The 2013 Shelby GT500 debuts this week at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Remarkably, the latest edition of the Shelby GT500 has a top speed in excess of 200 mph — thanks in part to its 3,850-pound weight — yet somehow manages to avoid the dreaded federal gas-guzzler tax.

Ford said it has reworked virtually every key component of the driveline, fitting a larger, more-efficient TVS supercharger, new cross-drilled engine block and cylinder heads, updated cam profiles, a new carbon-fiber driveshaft and upgraded clutch, transmission and axle.

To handle the additional torque while still delivering reasonable fuel economy, the six-speed manual transmission was regeared and beefed up.

The optional Performance package bundles SVT-designed Bilstein electronic adjustable dampers and a Torsen limited-slip differential. An optional Track package adds an external engine oil cooler, rear differential cooler and transmission cooler.

Among the additional features on the 2013 Shelby GT500 are a new launch control system, Brembo brakes, revised aerodynamics and new forged-aluminum wheels measuring 19 inches in front and 20 inches in the rear, all with Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar G: 2 tires.

You know, zr1boy is a real cupcake, a real Peter Pan guys. A corvette.....LMAO. A Vet is nothing more and has been nothing more than an engine. The interior is just god cheap and awful. The radio is a joke. The seats feel like they belong on a Kia. zr1boy is either........ a 5 foot 120 pound 40 year old geek who hasn't gotten a piece except from his mom. Or, a 5 foot 300 pound slob who hasn't gotten a piece except from his mom. A vet is a "Penis" car buddy. Let me explain that for you. A guy buys a vet thinking it will make him more attractive to the ladies, when in fact......the ladies are laughing at the dude because the women are the ones who came up with the term. I've heard several women point out a man driving a vet, at which point they all started busting out laughing. It was shortly followed up by..........."He must have a short penis because he is driving a vet." You might get away with impressing the Jr. High School chics with the hideous interior, cheap plastic knobs and one of the worst sounding stereo systems ever put into a vehicle, but a real woman likes to be seen in a real car. Not something the rednecks in the sticks threw together to try and out perform the previous vet........ er Penis car. You bought a ridiculous vehicle to enhance your social status, when in fact you became a bigger joke. When you walk away from your.......friends, they are laughing their butts off at you until you get around the corner. Heck, how can someone be so stupid? Makes me wonder if your not a 16 year old whose late to work and momma is about to drop you off at Taco Bell. I guess my 2011 M3 Coupe, loaded to the max........will have to do for now until I make it big time like you..........zr1infant.

I love ZR1Man.  He is so biased to the ZR1 that its Stupid.  I bet he will say the ZR1 can beat the STi and Evo in a dirt Rally race too.  lol.

This Mustang isnt suppose to go against the ZR1 but it is suppose to go against the ZL1 Camaro. These 2 cars are Muscle cars as both manufactures are just adding more and more power now a days.  Saying this GT500 cant beat the ZL1 is big talk since they havent been compared yet.  The V6 Stang is better than the Camaro V6 and the GT or the Boss is better than the SS.  I have driven all of them and I have to say that the Mustang feels better Stock.  The Camaro just feels heavy and soft.  Taking the same mid-high speed corner, +80MPH, I felt confident in the Mustang but in the Camaro it felt a little nervous and float.

In AutoX, the Camaro cant even compete in the same classes as the Mustang and Im not Biased to Ford at all.  Im disappointed the GT500 is 3850lbs as that is +200lbs more than the Boss.  It would be interesting to see what Pro drivers think of the GT500 vs the Laguna Seca Boss when it comes to driving feel.

@zr1manchild. Do you really think FoMoCo will just sit on their a.. while a stonger camaro goes on sale next year? I've had vettes, f-bodies, Stangs and just got rid of a Boss. Whose going to buy it? Same crowd that bought earlier GT500's. If I like what I read on the road tests, I will buy it! I don't care if you zr1 will beat it, punk. They build these cars to give enthusiasts what they want and not to race your zr1 and kill others you moron, go get a Focus!

Why even build this thing? It won't keep up with my 2010 ZR1 or even the new ZL1 Camaro. So who is going to buy it? Those who want to lose a race? It might beat a Challenger, but won't even run close with a ZR1 or ZL1. I could never figure Ford out.

    Chevy Runs Deep.

    @supercj427

I agree with you that you don't need 1000hp to reach 200mph.

But I wonder if the aerodynamics of the body are good enough to keep the car on the track at 200mph.

orbit09:  The Focus ST and Fiesta ST are twin turbo's.  The Fiesta uses a 1.5/1.6L GTDI, and the Focus ST uses the 2.0L GTDI.  They are smaller turbos in order to gain low end torque.  Quite impressive...

This uses a Tremec tranny, which is completely different from the standard 5.0L tranny.
