DEARBORN, Michigan — Ford said it will limit production of the 2011 Shelby GT500 to 5,500 units "to maintain exclusivity." The automaker added that "demand has exceeded expectations" and that it already has received 3,300 dealer and customer orders for the car.
Unveiled earlier this year at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show, the Shelby GT500 features a supercharged 5.4-liter V8 rated at 550 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. The 2011 model has a new 2.75-inch exhaust system, revised brakes and electric power-assisted steering. New options include a glass roof and an electronics package that bundles voice-activated navigation, Sirius Travel Link, HD radio and dual-zone automatic climate control.
Ford said the SVT Performance Package has been a popular option on the car. It includes Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar G:2 tires mounted on 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels, as well as a taller rear axle ratio, stiffer shocks and springs, lower ride height and unique styling details.
The 2011 Shelby GT500 coupe is priced from $49,495, while the convertible is priced from $54,495. Both stickers include an $850 shipping charge.

If you look at the production numbers for the previous years of GT500's they range anywhere between 6,500 and 4,200. When you take this into account, I fail to see how setting the production quantity at 5,500 is some kind of big deal that is going to make this car any more exclusive. 5,500 is about how many Shelby GT500's Ford was going to sell anyway, which is no doubt how Ford arrived at that number in the first place.

Alas, the dealers will still be discounting them at the end of the year.

It was funny to read this today. I was just asking a few friends at this weekends car club meeting how many more can they make. This is good news for me because I paid 47 for my 08 and now they are getting 35 for them used. Maybe this will help them hold more of their value.

great news for the collectors, good move by the company, and bad news for the fans.
