DEARBORN, Michigan — Ford has released a teaser image of its all-new Ranger pickup for Asia, while confirming that the U.S. Ranger will be dropped after 2011.

The new Ranger (code name T6) was designed and engineered in Australia and will be assembled in Thailand, alongside the redesigned Mazda BT-50. Both trucks will debut in mid-October at the 2010 Sydney Auto Show.

The Ranger gets a new four-cylinder engine family with more power and enhanced fuel economy.

Ford said the truck will be sold in 180 markets around the world, but not in the U.S.

I kinda like the old Ranger.  All they really have to do is update the engine and trans.  The truck still appears to be a solid contender.

The Ranger is a VERY popular model for Ford despite it's old design.  Sure, it gets worse gas mileage than alot of models but I think the Ranger has earned it's way up to be like Ford's version of the Jeep Wrangler.  They could've let it run for a few more years unchanged and I bet it would've STILL sold.  Stupid move on Ford's part BIG TIME!!!

CEO Alan Mullaly has already stated that they will not bring the global Ranger to the U.S. market.   I am assuming the same is true for Canada.  They don't think there is a big enough market for it and are afraid it will steal sales from the F150.  Ford had plans to build a smaller F100, but last I heard the project was cancelled.  Ranger sales have suffered as the result of Ford neglecting the aging current model.  Currently the F150 gets better mileage than the 4.0 Ranger, which is an embarrassment and something Ford tries to hide.  I am suspecting Ford has plans for a smaller truck in the U.S. but is keeping tight lipped about it for now.  The 3.7L with the 6 spd automatic transmission would be the perfect drivetrain for the American market and should easily be able to return 25 MPG hwy and exceed towing / hauling capacities of the current 4.0L model.  I would like to buy a new truck now, but am not interested in anything currently on the market.  I am excited about the powertrains in the 2011 F150, but the trucks bigger than I want.  If Ford doesn't have a new Ranger or F100 in the next two years I will probably buy the next generation Tacoma which I suspect will have the new 4.0 out of the current 4Runner.  I would rather have a new 3.7 Ranger though.

"Ill take mine in 2wd, step-side, 5-speed manual, 27 hwy MPG, and 200HP ecoboost 4cyl please!"

    Exactly, but I'm thinking 4wd (I live in Canada) , 6-speed manual!

Anyone know if they're gonna sell this vehicle is the Great North? *Fingers Crossed*

Could it be that Ford is waiting to hear what response they get from this decision, hear from those in the North American market that is? People demanded the Camaro and GM gave it to them almost exactly like the show car. I think Ford isn't that stupid (are they?) than to not give consumers a more fuel efficient truck with the V6 mentioned above, in an era of rising fuel costs (they will go back up, we all know it) global warming and massive oil spills. They just need the message, loud and clear. Listening Ford?

"I'm still confused by Ford's NON-explanation for why the new Ranger won't be sold in the U.S.A."

Exactly my thinking. How could having a compact pickup (a segment that's been completely forgotten for the past ten years) in the lineup possibly hurt either sales or CAFE requirements? If I was in the market for a truck I was only going to use as a truck twice a year (which, let's face it, is being generous to many truck buyers), I'd take a new Ranger with the Mustang's 300 hp V6 (retuned for more torque, less power, and better fuel economy I'd hope) over a gigantic F-150 I can't park downtown. Sounds like Ford's pulling a bonehead move. Thankfully they're becoming increasingly rare from Detroit's strongest company.
