WASHINGTON — Ford is recalling 26,715 trucks, including the 2004-'11 Ford Ranger, 2002-'05 Ford Excursion and 2002-'07 Ford F-Series 250-550 because a faulty switch may cause the loss of turn signal lights, brake lights, taillights and hazard lights, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"The (steering wheel) multifunction switch was shipped with a subcomponent slider that may experience deformation," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "A multifunction switch with a deformed slider may malfunction, causing the turn signal, taillights, hazard warning signal flashers and/or brake lights not to activate.

"Non-functioning lights could increase the risk of a crash."

Ford issued a stop-sale notice to its dealers regarding the 2011 Ranger in early July until the problem can be resolved.

"We are not aware of any accidents or injuries (related to the recall)," wrote Wes Sherwood, a Ford spokesman in response to an e-mailed query from Inside Line on Wednesday.

Ford dealers will replace the switch. The recall is expected to begin on August 15. Owners can contact Ford at (866) 436-7332.

Inside Line says: If you own one of the aforementioned Ford trucks, be aware that a recall is in the works.
