DETROIT — The ongoing popularity of the Chevrolet Camaro is no fluke. For the second straight year, the Camaro is expected to outsell its nearest rival, the Ford Mustang, and by an even bigger margin than in 2010, according to projections by Edmunds.com.

Last year, Camaro knocked Mustang off its perch as pony-car champ, with 81,299 sales compared with 73,716. Until then, Mustang had held the crown for 24 consecutive years.

For the first 11 months of this year, Camaro has further widened its lead over Mustang and should finish the year with a comfortable edge.

Through November, Camaro sales totaled 81,495 units, compared with 65,381 for Mustang. Edmunds.com estimates that Chevrolet will close the year with around 89,000 Camaros delivered, while Ford will finish with about 71,000 Mustangs sold — a projected margin of 18,000 units.

Sales of the Dodge Challenger, another retro-styled muscle car, are a distant third. The January-November tally was 36,250, with estimated full-year sales of 39,500.

Further, Chevrolet dealers are realizing higher average transaction prices than Ford and Dodge dealers, although the margin in this case is thin.

According to figures compiled by Edmunds.com, the average dealer transaction price this year on the Camaro is $32,452, compared with $32,277 for Mustang and $32,324 for Challenger.

This is great for GM had the Camaro fallen on it's face GM likely would have re-entered bankruptcy. However these "Camaro outsells Mustang" Articles fail to mention this is after a 6 year absence. I expect the Camaro to continue to outsell the Mustang for the next 3-4 years and this will mostly fulfill former Camaro fans that held on to their 2003 and earlier Camaros can can't stand the rattles any longer.
The Mustang in it's current form is still selling nicely given it's appearance hasn't truly changed that much since 2005. And frankly I believe Ford has handled the introduction of IRS/DI to their vehicles badly, anyone that follows Ford Mustangs knows these updates are waiting in the wings so why not wait a little longer for them?

@ 1krider1, spoken like a complete tool. Chew on this, the Boss LS just completed C&D's 2012 Lightning lap at 3:02.8 minutes and besting the; Porsche Cayman R, Audi TT RS, Mercedes C63 AMG, BMW 1- Series M, Dodge Challenger SRT8, Dodge Charger SRT8, Lotus Exige S, Lotus Evora, Camaro SS, Cobalt SS, Honda S2000 CR, Mazda Miata, just to name a few.

So take your "Anyone who buys a solid rear axel in 2011 is an IDIOT." and shove it sqaure up your ass.

Nice, I can remember the hundreds of post's I read saying the camaro is just a fad and give it six months, GM will be giving these things away. The mustang will retake its rightful place as the pony car king.

Where are all those posters at now?

Oh this is nothing. Wait for the next round. Lighter Camaro and Mustang in the wings. Mustang gets IRS and more. Both lose lots of weight, about time on that. More Go with more fun. More efficiency. This is just lull before the real fun starts. The FAT will end and lean trim fighters of the Pony Car wars will be great once again. By the way I have owned a Camaro and now a Mustang GT prior to the 5.0. I love it. Ponies are fun rides.

If Chevy didn't stop making the Camaro after finishing second for 24 strait years, it's a safe bet that the Mustang production will continue after finishing second for 2 years.

Well, the General flexes his mussels again. Little Bro continues to outsell the 'stang, even for more money. Even IL admits, "it's no fluke."

Just goes to show more people, will spend more money, for a Camaro than a lowly mustang. At this rate ford just might decide to retire the old nag.

Now you can catch the best of the ZR1MAN just by Googleing "zr1man says". Google has been kind enough to index all of my entries on IL.

    Chevy Runs Deep.

If I was to choose between the two I would go with the Mustang! But I would paint it Bullit Green, so
I can pretend to be Steve McQueen in Frisco.

Ford is relying on the Mustang's colorful history of being the best in its class while Chevrolet is relying on the Transformers Series as marketing.

I'll take the next Gen. Challenger. I'm liking what Dodge is offering nowadays.
