    Sure, go ahead and buy one of the famous 1960s-era Ford Mustangs if you want something to park at classic car shows. But if you want a Ford Mustang that's good to drive, you should look to the Mustangs of the 21st century.

    Yes, it's true; the most powerful and best-handling Mustangs on the record books have been sold in the last decade. Ford's modern muscle car is also vastly more refined and easier to drive than any of its ancestors. We hope you enjoy this gallery of our favorite Ford Mustang photos from 2006-'11.

    We start you out with the 2011 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 and 2011 Ford Shelby GT500 and then work back in time. You'll see Mustangs doing burnouts, plus the limited-edition 2008 Shelby GT500KR.

    By the end of it all, you'll be so into modern Mustangs that you'll have to get one of your own.

    The 2005-2009 Mustangs look much better than the 2010-2011 Mustangs.  No denying it--until you raise the hood and see all-aluminum, fuel-injected, four-valves-per-cylinder, twin independent variable camshaft timing powerhouses in two class-leading flavors.  The 2011 Mustang makes up for its looks right then and there!  The V6 even goes one better with its polished buckets topping those valve stems (which Ford shoulda carried over into the 5.0L V8 as well).  Six speeds don't hurt, either!

    It is astonishing that the Mustang GT went up only $1200 between 2010 and 2011--everything got upgraded except for the looks.  Just consider what a massive, omigod effort of catching up the two imitations from Chevrolet and Dodge will have to do just to be allowed to use the same parking decks as the new Mustangs.  And they both already cost more than the 2011 Mustangs!

    Seriously, what can Chevrolet and Dodge do that will reduce the technological gap yet won't price the Camaro and the Challenger out of the market?

    @firelicked,

    The '11 Mustangs are all 6-speeds (auto and manual.)  That pic is from a '10 Mustang.

    "kosmo69 says: you mean like bailing hey, like in my truck??? "  You'd be dangerious if you'd learn to spell.  What ever elementry school you attend, the school district need to limit access to the computor lab !  The proper spelling is " hay bale ! "

    Third group of pics, shows the gear shifter. It states that it is a 6 speed and clearly it's a five. So is this the gear shift from the 6cyl? Is the 5.0L a 6 speed or not? Is the 6cyl a 5 speed or can you get a 6speed in it as well.  If so, is it the same style of shifter ball? I like the cue ball style. Just curious.

    A prime example of how competition improves the breed.

    Anyone who still thinks rear live axle for the new Mustang is a bad setup is a complete idiot.  Test data shows clearly there is no need for IRS in this application."

    I am a true long time Mustang fan and owner. Without the Camaro we would still be looking at 315hp in the Mustang. I applaud GM's efforts and hope this epic contest goes on for another 40 years!

    I have to agree the LRA is older than the hill, but at the same time the Camaro's IRS is a POS so it doesn't really matter. Ford continues to make the LRA work, just like chevy makes pushrods work. I mean who thought we would still be using internal combustion engines 40 years ago?
