Inside Line's spy shooter caught prototypes of Ford's 2013 Mustang GT500 lapping the Nurburgring in Germany.

2013 Ford Mustang GT500 Spy Video

    1:12 min

This week, we have spy footage of a Ford Shelby GT500 testing on the Nurburgring.   Compared to the regular GT500, this one has a lower ride height, canards, larger rear brakes, a full roll cage and a Nurburgring badge for good measure.  But it's what's behind the grille that caught our attention. There's an additional or revamped intercooler, which could mean a new turbocharged V8 engine. Then again, does this sound turbocharged to you?  Given the other performance bits and pieces, this could also be a more hardcore, track-ready version of the GT500 along the same lines as the Boss 302.  Either way, we'll keep our ears and eyes open for future news on this possible new GT500.

@zr1man     Not dissing the ZR1 vette' here, but, it achieved that time(7:19.63) using
super-slick track dot competition tires. It's really 7:26.5 with normal street tires. So I think
that's a bigger inter-cooler meaning the cobra's packing more hp?

Manglord, Ford used IRS on Mustangs back in 1999. It would be better for you if you had a clue to go along with your gluttony for punishment and biased, silly comments. Ford opted to continue using a solid axle because they wanted more than road course appeal and just look how good it is. They also took the advice of people who actually want or have them.

Mustang still more than solidly competes with IRS equipped cars, some costing much more. For example, Camaro SS and BMW M3. Just because IRS sounds like a massive upgrade, doesn't mean every car not using it is "decades" behind. In fact, the current Mustang outperforms most cars ever made, including almost every car offered today, even without IRS. Reality is, some of the greatest performers ever, used solid rear "live" axle suspension.

All I can say to the GT500 (new or existing)...... Bring it on baby! The ZR1 just set a record time at Nürburgring of 7:19.63. Take a look at the video:

    http://wot.motortrend.com/video-find-2012-chevrolet-corvette-zr1-cuts-six-seconds-nurburgring-lap-time-85635.html

Then compare it to the IL video. You can see how much better the ZR1 handles and how much faster it is.

Besides, you know what F.O.R.D. stands for.

    ZR1 Rules!

"The consensus of opinion  by automotive writers is that the new Mustang should be introduced in 2014 to coincide with its 50th anniverary."

I missed the part where automotive journalists ran automobile manufacturers.

I like what I see and hear. I certainly heard the faint while of a supercharger. yes, when the Mustang was introduced in spring of 1964, it was considered by many of us back then as a 1964 model. Later on, when the 65 model was introduced in the fall did writers begin referring to the first car as a 64 1/2. A mid-year model introduction was a rare event back then.

The consensus of opinion  by automotive writers is that the new Mustang should be introduced in 2014 to coincide with its 50th anniverary. Slapping some stripes and go-gaws on the current model and calling it a 50th anniversary model would be lame.

I want to see a lighter, slightly, just slightly smaller Mustang perhaps close in size to the old Fox body car. The current model, like the Camaro are just too big, too heavy and too expensive. Keep a close eye on Hyundai and Kia boys. Because they get it. The Japanese manufacturers don't. At least not yet.

Ford stuns the world by opting for IRS in the Mustang!  Just in time to be decades behind everyone else.  Whoo Hoo!

"The original was introduced mid-year in 1964, making it 1964 1/2."

But the official model year was 1965. The mid-year intro was a favorite of Lee Iacocca. And yes I know about how the first ones had the 260 V8 etc.  My family has had a ton of Mustangs over the years and we all laugh at seeing license plate frames that say "64 1/2 Mustang"  It is a made up term by those wanting to up the value of old Mustangs....kind of like those who market "teacup" Chihuahuas.....it is just BS to try and charge more.

Definitely still supercharged. You can hear it in the clip.

    @saunupe1911:

The original was introduced mid-year in 1964, making it 1964 1/2.

I don't expect Ford to forget about the significance there when making introducing the 50 year anniversary model.  I'll bet there will special editions in early 2014 with the new model being introduced mid year.
