2012 Mustang Boss 302 Aims To Steal Dream Cruise Limelight

    Just the Facts:
    • 2012 Mustang Boss 302 will make its second public appearance August 20-21 during Michigan's Woodward Dream Cruise.
    • The special edition will be part of a larger display of more than 500 Mustangs.
    • Mustang Boss 302 debuted last week at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

    DEARBORN, Michigan — The 2012 Mustang Boss 302 is being prepped for its second public appearance, this time at the Woodward Dream Cruise — an annual Motor City muscle-car extravaganza — August 20-21, Ford confirmed for Inside Line on Tuesday.

    The 2012 Mustang Boss 302 will be part of a larger display of more than 500 Mustangs at the annual event, including 10 historic Boss Mustangs owned by Ford employees. The company is planning to bring four prototypes of the 2012 Mustang Boss 302 to the Dream Cruise.

    In the meantime, Ford is beginning to dribble out a few more details about the warmly received 2012 Mustang Boss 302, including its pricing strategy, even though the automaker emphasized that formal pricing will not be announced until the fall, most likely prior to the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show.

    The 2012 Mustang Boss 302 will not be the most expensive pony car. Instead, it will be positioned between the Mustang GT and the Shelby GT500, said Ford spokesperson Angie Kozleski in a phone conversation with Inside Line. "We're talking roughly between $34,950 and $49,995 (MSRP)," said Kozleski. "Mustang is fun, fast and affordable. We want to make sure it's a performance Mustang at an affordable price."

    Kozleski was unprepared to talk about volume on the Mustang Boss 302. "We're sorting through that right now," she said. "It will be limited." While Ford said it is tracking the number of people who are searching Mustang Boss 302 on the Internet, it is "too early to see the hand-raisers" who want to buy the car," Kozleski said.

    EPA fuel-economy estimates on the Mustang Boss 302 will be released early next spring, she added.

    The Mustang Boss 302's first appearance on the upcoming auto show circuit will be at the 2010 SEMA Auto Show, followed by the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show. Kozleski said it will not be shown at the 2010 Paris Auto Show.

    Ford is also taking a rather conservative approach to showcasing the Mustang Boss 302 via social media. Kozleski said the new model probably will not get its own Facebook page. Instead, it will be part of a larger Mustang site on Facebook. The Mustang also has dedicated pages on YouTube, Twitter and Flickr.

    Ford unveiled the 2012 Mustang Boss 302 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on August 13. The Mustang Boss 302 produces 440 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque from an upgraded version of the Mustang GT 5.0's V8.

    The Woodward Dream Cruise is a classic car event held in August in suburban Detroit. Organizers bill it as "the world's largest one-day celebration of car culture, attracting more than 1 million visitors and over 40,000 muscle cars."

    What sucks is that I have seen multiple Stealerships trying to sell Boss 302 LS's for $100,000 online, which is absolute BULL$#!T No matter how good it it. Pay DOUBLE THE MRSP??? Please Ford, hunt these crooks down and reclaim their allotment of cars and send it to the dealerships that aren't adding multiple thousands to the price.

    I have been looking forward to the release of the 2012 Boss 302 Mustang for a while, and now that it's finally here, I'd really be interested in purchasing it... BUT NOT FOR ONE DIME OVER MSRP!

    Why must dealerships take advantage of the low production numbers of these cars and fleece their customers? After an online inquiry, my local Ford dealer notified me that they are? asking $10,000 over MSRP for the new Boss 302 Mustang, and that amount is non-negotiable. I told them to KISS? MY ASS!

    I'll sell all of my BMW's and be very happy with one of these cars(Laguna model). It will make us older folks feel young again. Back to our college times and the ability to enjoy an American Icon.

    I hate when people just run their mouths without actually knowing about something or do any research at all....

    @jmaroun:

    -First of all, 3 series are not the ultimate sport cars which every other car needs to be compared to. The only performance car there is the M3.
    -Second, the 2011 5.0 Mustang GT, it already matches the M3 in perfomance, motor trend already did a vs within the two cars, and the mustang won at everything but the race track, the M3 was less than a tenth of a second faster, and its 27k more expensive, with a couple upgrades to suspension the 5.0 will beat the M3

    @2006vr6:

    The BOSS doesn't need to wear the 5.0 badge!!! cause 302 stands for 302cc!!, cc stands for cubic inches, and 302cc = 5 liters, wearing a 5.0 badge will be redundant and unnecessary, plus the original BOSS from the 70's was called BOSS 302, there is no reason to change an already iconic name

    Ford is producing great cars, the mustang is just a sample, i love european cars, specially audis, i think bmws are overrated, but muscle cars have a different personality its a whole different beast, and i already told my girl that we are getting this car no matter what, i just want to piss off M3 owners, cause this car will be an M3 eater, and see their faces when they realize a ford mustang just beat their 67K ultimate driving machine, hahhahahaha

    Too bad it will be limited production. 3500 for 2012 and 3500 for 2013. Once again Ford screws the enthusiast. Apparently Ford only wants the rich to have their muscle cars not the true enthusiast. They need to build as many as demand calls for.

    Kind of sad to see the 5.0 emblem not on the front quarter panels.  To me, I never considered the six a real mustang.  Until the 2011 V6 powertrain that is.  The 5.0 badge is simply historic and should be proudly pinned on all 302 trim levels.  Really nice to see it back for 2011.

    Hmmm....

    Nice job Ford. I have never bought an American car, ever. Now I see the GT's performance is on par with the new M3's. Motor Trend just did a side-by-side comparison on the Street's of Willow. The Mustang has definitely raised an eyebrow or two. As far as the price, I'm looking at buying a 370Z or Mustang in the next year or two. Don't get arrogant but keep the price of this car in the mid-thirties and I will likely buy it. I would like to have a four seater V8 with 370Z handling. The only real thing that concerns me besides the price is the weight because I would like to eventually track the car. Thanks!

    Articles the other day stated the new Fiesta was still delayed because of the damaged railways in MEXICO. Anyone know if the Mustang is built in Mexico along with the Fusion (HERMOSILLO PLANT)??

    You've got alot of contradictions going on. The Mustang covers a decent range of customers with the different setups of the vehicle. Alot of what you are stating is personal opinion too. The current Mustang excluding the Boss offers around 10 models. This covers the base Mustang $22k -up to the $53k convertible GT500. The ones you'll find at a car rental place will more than likely be the base V6 model, with the exception of the Hertz only edition of the GT350 I believe (which stayed checked out btw).

    You go on to mention certain groups of people don't drive a Mustang because of a certain image it evokes (opinion). I know CPA's that own and LOVE their Mustangs. Does this make them less professional or a "greasy mechanic"? Absolutely not! People buy cars for their own personal reasons and the Mustang appeals to all walks of life.

    I personally think the 3 series is a boring car throughout its entire lineup with the exception of the M3. This is just my opinion, many can and will argue that. But the Mustang has come a long way, its interior is much more attractive to me than ANY 3 Series...again my opinion only. There are several Mustangs that can compete and outperform that M3 too(fact), the Boss 302 will be an addition to the Mustangs that will do the same AND save you thousands of dollars doing so!(fact)

    Be happy with your Mustang, I'm sure its a pretty good machine! :)
