DEARBORN, Michigan — The 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302S was unveiled on Thursday, priced at $79,000. It's not street-legal, but strictly for racing.

The "S" stands for "Spec," noted Brent Maurer, Ford Racing spokesman, in a phone conversation with Inside Line. "We wanted to update the spec version. This car is built on the production line and ready for those who want to go competitive. But it is not street-legal. It's for racing."

The 2012 Boss 302, which is due out in the spring, is street-legal.

The Mustang Boss 302S is spun off the Boss 302. The 302S has a Boss 5.0-liter V8 and a six-speed transmission. Other features include a six-point FIA-legal roll cage, a Recaro Hans Pro-Racer lightweight racing seat, a six-point safety belt, a quick-release steering wheel and an AIM data acquisition system with GPS.

Other upgrades include a unique fiberglass heat-extracting hood, adjustable front splitter and adjustable carbon-fiber rear wing. A retro Boss 302 graphics package is included that "mimics the graphics from the original 1969 Boss 302 program," Ford Racing said in a statement.

Just remove one digit from the price of a gallon of gas and it's 1969 all over again!

History of the Mustang's factory built for racing is that every one of them will be sold, and quickly.  The Cobra R, Cobra Drag Pack, even original Boss models all sold quickly and are prized today.  Ford will probably lose money on every one but the press will be invaluable.

That is a cheap, cheap, cheap turn-key factory race car!  If it's got a worthwhile series to go with it they'll sell a bunch.

    I bet they'll sell 4 of them.
