DEARBORN, Michigan — The 2012 Ford Blue Angels Mustang, which pays tribute to 100 years of naval aviation, will cross the auction block on July 28 at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh.

The exterior of the Ford Blue Angels Mustang was inspired by the F-18 Hornet aircraft and includes a custom rear spoiler with vertical tailfins and one-of-a-kind chrome blue paint with "screaming yellow" gloss accents.

The cabin gets leather Recaro racing seats with the Blue Angels crest and offset stripes said to be inspired by pilot flight suits. Other touches include special cluster graphics, performance gauges, navigation screen images and puddle lamps that project jet images when the doors open.

The one-off Mustang is equipped with a 624-horsepower Ford Racing supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine.

The sale of the Mustang will benefit the EAA Young Eagles organization, which provides free introductory flights to young people. To participate in the auction, candidates must prequalify by contacting Matt Miller in the EAA Development Office at 800-236-1025 or at mmiller@eaa.org by July 25.

Ford has built other vehicles in support of EAA Young Eagles, including the Mustang AV8R, inspired by the F-22 Raptor. That 2008 vehicle introduced the glass-roof canopy and fetched $500,000 at auction, Ford noted.

In 2010, Carroll Shelby and Jack Roush collaborated on the SR-71 Blackbird Mustang to benefit EAA Young Eagles.

Inside Line says: A must-have for fans of the Blue Angels and the Mustang.

The Chrome Blue paint and multi-piece wheels are stunning.  Too bad I don't have the means to bid on it myself.

So is this one-off giving us a preview of the next GT500 powerplant?

I'm not a Mustang guy at all (heck, I'm not even a Ford guy) but that's one cool Mustang and tip of the old cap for the support/publicity generated for a very worthy cause.

So beautiful.  I hope whoever buys it will take it out of their collection and show it off to the public once in a while.
