OSHKOSH, Wisconsin — The SR-71 Mustang, a one-off collaboration between Jack Roush and Carroll Shelby, was auctioned late last week for $375,000 to an undisclosed buyer. In the meantime, NASCAR team owner Jack Roush remained hospitalized at the Mayo Clinic, following a plane crash last Tuesday, Roush spokesman John Clark told Inside Line on Monday.
Roush was transferred from a Wisconsin hospital to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, to be treated for facial injuries sustained in the crash, according to a statement from Roush Performance Products.
The motorsports magnate crashed his plane at an airport here on Tuesday and was reported to be in serious but stable condition upon being transferred to the Mayo Clinic.
In the meantime, the SR-71 crossed the auction block on Thursday, with proceeds benefiting the Experimental Aircraft Association Young Eagles Program.
The one-of-a-kind Mustang is inspired by the SR-71 Blackbird, the long-range reconnaissance USAF aircraft built by Lockheed Martin.
Vehicle features include an aluminum-block 5.0-liter engine with a Whipple twin-screw supercharger, SVT Track Pack wheels, a glass roof with a graphic treatment and custom Recaro seats with embroidered signatures of Roush and Shelby.
Inside Line says: A collector's dream fetches top dollar, as Jack Roush remains on the mend at the Mayo Clinic. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent

Seems like an obscene amount to pay for what is essentially a customized version of a car currently in production....but the fact that Carroll Shelby was personally involved and puts his stamp on it has a lot to do with it. I mean he's in his late 80's now...how many more one-offs can he possibly make? Anything carrying his name after he's gone doesn't count anymore..

mike1489 - there are better ways to give to charity like donating the cash than making oneself look like a sucker by buying a special edition car that is anything but special.

Aside from the matte black finish and stylized Air Force insignia, any resemblance to an SR-71 is purely hallucinatory. These special edition blown Mustangs are boceming so common as to loose their specialness and unless you are a fighter jock, this one just looks dumb.

"the SR-71 crossed the auction block on Thursday, with proceeds benefiting the Experimental Aircraft Association Young Eagles Program."
It was an auction for CHARITY, ive seen people pay $100,000 for a $5,000 item because not only do they have plenty of money and want the item being auctioned, but they can also WRITE IT OFF AS A DONATION!

You can buy multiple top notch Kirkham Cobras for that money.

Can't you get into a real Shelby Cobra for that kind of money given today's market. Perhaps not a concours winner with a racing pedigree, but last I check you were at least with striking range.

Probably would've fetched more for auction if they got Carol & Jack to sign the damn thing coupled with the embroided signatures...

Yeah, they make these "special version" mustangs like cupcakes. Wait, a new type of mustang was just released while this article was being written. Who cares.

A one-off collaboration between Roush and Shelby? Now *that's* a collector's car!
