Yankees-Striped 2010 Ford Mustang GT Up for Auction

PLEASANT VALLEY, New York — The New York Yankees have legions of fans and an equal number of detractors, but there's no denying that their pinstripe uniform is classic. The look has been carried over to a one-of-a-kind 2010 Ford Mustang GT that has been completely decked out in a Yankees color scheme, and the car is currently up for auction online.

The Yankees Mustang was a prize in the Tri-State Sweepstakes and was given away with great fanfare at the World Series this year but is now on the market by Absolute Auctions and Realty. The company says the winner of the car is a "lifetime Yankees fan" but is choosing to take the cash from the sale to spend on his children's education.

The pinstriped pony car's dashboard is signed by Derek Jeter, who was just named Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year. Auction company AAR says the odometer shows less than 1,000 miles and the car is "complete with all paperwork." The Mustang has the GT's 4.6-liter V8, automatic transmission, blue interior lighting, a convertible top and leather interior, Shaker 500 MP3-enabled audio system and 19-inch alloy wheels, among other amenities. But of course, it's all about the collectibility.

Bidding ends on Tuesday, December 15, at 8:00 p.m. EDT. So far, the top bid is for $28,250 from someone whose screen name is "classyresto." The fan site Muscular Mustangs points out that Ford dealers in the New York area did previously make some special Yankees-themed Mustangs several years ago, meaning this "one-of-a-kind" car may not actually be the only one of its breed.

Inside Line says: For die-hard Yankee fans and collectors, the fact that this car was given out on the day of the 2009 World Series win at the end of the first year in the new stadium could make it a tempting acquisition. — Laura Sky Brown, Correspondent
