The standard SMS460 (based on the 2010 Ford Mustang GT) has a 4.6-liter V8 under the hood that makes 470 horsepower and 427 pound-feet of torque, while the high-end 460X gets new internals for a 5.0-liter V8 with 655 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque. The power gains are thanks to SMS's 296 supercharger. Transmission options include a five-speed automatic or manual on the 460 and the option of a six-speed SMST manual on the 460X.
The SMS 460 makes the run to 60 mph in less than 4.5 seconds, and the 460X does it a bit faster, in just 4 seconds. Both vehicles have a new parallel linkage suspension as well as 15-inch six-piston front and 13-inch four-piston rear brakes.
SMS gives the exterior a new look with its Signature Series front bumper, rear bumper, side skirts, splitters, rear wing and the Red Butterfly Induction hood that was also seen on the SMS 570 Challenger. Twenty-inch multispoke alloys finish off the look and give the vehicle a new stance.
The interior also gets decked out in Alcantara or leather, and SMS gives you the chance to customize the cabin with different upholsteries and colors. Other features include a leather-wrapped shift knob, 200-mph gauge cluster, a dash signed by Steve Saleen and a Shaker 500 stereo with Sync.
The SMS 460 is still in the testing stages but will hit the market later this year. Estimated MSRP for the 460 coupe is $64,990 ($69,990 for the convertible), and the 460X is slightly more expensive at $85,961 for the coupe and $90,961 for the convertible variant.
Inside Line says: SMS creates a well-rounded package both aesthetically and performance-wise with its 2010 460 and 460X Mustang. — Mike Lysaght, Correspondent
