WASHINGTON — Roush Performance Products is recalling 81 of its 2010 Ford Mustangs, including the Roush 427R Mustang, Roush Stage 1 Mustang and Roush Stage 2 Mustang with the sport brake kit option because loose bolts could result in a "loss of stopping performance," says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"The caliper anchor plate mounting bolts may become loose or dislodged during operation," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "This failure may result in a loss of stopping performance, possibly resulting in a vehicle crash."
In other documentation filed with the federal government, Roush said its "analysis concluded that in extreme conditions the vehicle braking could fail completely, which could result in a crash."
Roush said it will begin notifying customers this week about the problem. Dealers will remove and replace both the front and rear caliper anchor plate mounting bolts for free.
The tuner traced the problem to "the lack of proper torque at the time of installation." Roush said it first became aware of the problem after it was contacted by a Ford dealer on July 14. "The dealer reported that the problems were evident when the vehicles were driven as demonstration vehicles," the documentation said. In two separate incidents, drivers heard noise coming from the front end of the vehicles. The most serious incident appeared to involve one test driver who got out to investigate the noise and then resumed driving. "Thereafter, the caliper bolt came loose and the caliper came off, requiring her to apply the emergency brake," the documentation said.
Owners can contact Roush for more information at 866-307-6788.
