SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — The No. 5 Iacocca Silver 45th-Anniversary Edition Ford Mustang promises to be one of the showstoppers when it crosses the auction block on Friday at the 2009 Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas event. It is one of 45 to be built and gets a unique 550-horsepower engine.
In the run-up to the auction, Barrett-Jackson issued a statement that said "a personal message from [Lee] Iacocca will be delivered to the crowd in Las Vegas."
Forty-five years ago, Iacocca, then a young Ford executive, launched the original Mustang at the 1964 New York World's Fair. His new namesake Mustang is built on a 2009 Mustang platform and is painted silver with such features as a Ford Racing handling package and a cockpit with diamond-design leather seats.
Barrett-Jackson notes that the No. 5 Iacocca Mustang is "specially equipped with a 550-hp engine featuring a Ford Racing polished Supercharger that includes dyno sheets and other documentation." The engine is linked to a five-speed manual transmission. It also gets an Iacocca signature dash plaque with serial number.
The other Iacocca Mustangs can be ordered with a stock 320-hp Ford 4.6-liter V8 or a 400-hp supercharged variant.
Iacocca has teamed with designer Michael Leone, coachbuilder Gaffoglio Family Metalcrafters and the Design Company in a new business venture called I Legacy. The Iacocca Mustangs are sold through Galpin Ford in Southern California.
