Full story: Ford begins shipping a convertible model of the iconic Mustang pony car this week, a move designed to strengthen its North American lineup and boost flagging sales.
The 2005 Mustang convertible starts at $24,495, including destination, for the base model that comes equipped with a 210-horsepower, 4.0-liter V6 and a five-speed manual transmission. The top-of-the-line Mustang GT convertible starts at $29,995, including destination, and is equipped with a 300-hp, 4.6-liter V8 and a five-speed manual transmission.
The new convertible is built at the company's AutoAlliance International plant in Flat Rock, Michigan.
Ford saw its U.S. sales fall nearly 5 percent in 2004, despite the launch of such products as the Five Hundred sedan, the Freestyle wagon and the Mercury Montego sedan.
The Mustang has been the bright spot in the lineup of new Ford products thus far. The company said it has sold more than 33,000 new Mustangs with nearly 12,000 orders — many for the convertible — still waiting to be filled.
What this means to you: You should be able to get your hands on the hottest version of the Mustang just in time for spring.
