Ford Mustang GT-R concept
What's special about it?
With the imminent arrival of the new Mustang just around the corner, Ford is already looking ahead to see what could be done with the new pony car to make it even more mouth watering. One result is the GT-R concept, a pumped-up track-ready Mustang that harkens back to the Mustang's Trans Am heydays while at the same time demonstrating the potential that lurks beneath the skin of the newest 'Stang.
The car is built around Ford's new "Cammer" crate engine that has been tweaked to produce 500 horsepower. A long list of hot-rodder upgrades that includes a higher compression ratio, ported heads, a variable magnesium intake and high-lift cams helps the 5.0-liter engine develop its impressive power output. A heavy-duty T56 six-speed transmission sends the power to ground via an aluminum driveshaft and short 4.56 rear end gears. The chassis received numerous upgrades as well like remote reservoir coil-over shocks, lightweight suspension pieces and a serious set of Brembo brakes. A set of 20-inch wheels wrapped in 30-series Pirelli race rubber completes the track-read package.
What's Edmunds Take?
There's no doubt that the new Mustang will make yet another great platform from which to build backyard dragsters and weekend track racers, but Ford beat all others to the punch with the GT-R concept. Although the Blue Oval boys were quick to point out that the GT-R could qualify for any number of road racing series, we would be surprised to see a Mustang in full race trim on the Speed Channel anytime soon.
