Concept Car: Ford Mustang FR500

We were impressed by the Ford SVT Mustang Cobra R. We wanted one. Then we got a look at the Ford Mustang FR500. Suddenly, our desire for a Cobra R dropped to a level held for a '78 Pinto with a blown head gasket. What we really wanted was a FR500.

The FR500 is Ford Racing's "...ultimate performance parts project." As such, it isn't a production car like the Cobra R, but more a trial balloon to see how interested the public will be in the performance parts featured on the car.

The engine is a 4.6-liter, 32-valve unit bored out to 5.0 liters. It's fitted with all sorts of trick components to make 415 horsepower. Serious suspension tuning (the wheelbase is extended by 5 inches, for instance) gives the car a 50/50 weight distribution. Much of the body is carbon fiber. On street tires, Ford says the FR500 goes from zero to 60 in 4.6 seconds and has a top speed of 175 mph. Can you say Corvette killer?
