FREEPORT, Maine — The L.L. Bean Bootmobile, a whimsical truck designed to honor the retailer's iconic Maine Hunting Shoe, embarked on a year-long road trip around the U.S. on Wednesday.
The Bootmobile celebrates L.L. Bean's 100th anniversary and is already drawing comparisons to the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile, the iconic vehicle that celebrates the hot dog.
If the Bootmobile were a real boot it would fit a 147-foot-tall person, says the retailer. L.L. Bean is also asking the public to guess "what shoe size would this Paul Bunyan-esque person wear?" The retailer says it will post the correct shoe size on its corporate blog next week.
The Bootmobile is build on a Ford truck frame and features shoelaces made out of mooring rope that can pull 120 tons. The vehicle is 20 feet long, with a door cut into the heel for the driver. Designers came up with the concept by experimenting with model trucks tucked inside of the Maine Hunting Shoe.
Inside Line says: Does the L.L. Bean Bootmobile give the Wienermobile a run for the money?

I feel real pity for all the people who, when they see a giant boot-mobile, immediately start the hating.
So things are not all made in the poorly run pouting factories of your youth in the nineteenth century, so what?
It's a giant boot that you can drive. That should make you smile, not frown. Ah, you poor, poor people.
Smile more. Try it. It really works.

Since to Bootmobile is built on a Ford frame, I assume I can get an Eddie Bauer Edition, right?

LL Bean used to be a great company. In the good old days quality mattered most. Now it's all about taking cost out of the products while maintaining the traditional look, duping suckers from the 'burbs into believing they're wearing something well made and sophisticated. I suppose after the current private owners have finished cashing out what they can from what's left of the brand's equity they'll sell to a nice foreign company and complete the destruction.
Bean could take a lesson from the auto industry, where enthusiasts are the opinion makers. Once the folks that know what LL Bean was compared to what it is now tell all their friends, the empty shell called LL Bean will collapse quickly.

Ole L.L. died many years ago and and so did his company ! It is a retailer of offshore made products and why we refer to it up here in North Country as "LL CHINA". By the way, the famous LL BOOT is "assembled" in Maine. At least that's a few jobs here !
