CHP Sponsors Yates Racing Ford Fusion for NASCAR Sprint Cup

SONOMA, California — The NASCAR Sprint Cup series will make its only Northern California stop for the 2008 season this upcoming June 22 for the Toyota/Save Mart 350, and the number 28 Yates Racing Ford Fusion will feature quite an interesting paint job: It will be wearing the colors and design of a California Highway Patrol vehicle.

The California Highway Patrol is excited for the car's debut, which should help with the agency's current "very energetic recruitment push," said Mark Garrett, public affairs recruitment sergeant for the CHP's Southern Division. "We know how effective and influential NASCAR is," he told Inside Line.

The black-and-white CHP-design Fusion will be driven by 2003 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion Travis Kvapil. A set of gold-and-black Goodyear Eagle tires almost perfectly matches the CHP logo that decorates the hood.

This will be the California Highway Patrol's first venture into Cup sponsorship. At this point, the plan is to back the Yates Racing Ford Fusion for only one race.

What this means to you: Both NASCAR and CHiPs fans will enjoy seeing the police look-alike vehicle race around the 1.99-mile road course. — Mike Lysaght, Correspondent
