DEARBORN, Michigan — The all-new 2013 Ford Fusion will be equipped with technology that helps drivers stay alert and prevent them from drifting out of a lane.
The Lane Keeping System uses a digital camera mounted on the windshield near the rearview mirror to detect veering in lanes, which causes a vibration in the steering wheel, notifying drivers to correct the course or seek rest if they're drowsy.
This safety feature is usually found in luxury vehicles. Ford says the 2013 Fusion will be the first mainstream midsize sedan in North America to offer this technology.
Ford, which will debut the 2013 Fusion next week at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, will roll out the Lane Keeping System on a wide range of its vehicles over the next several years, including the 2013 Explorer.
"This technology is (typically) found in more expensive vehicles, but even in a midsize sedan, people want their creature comforts," said Octavio Navarro, Ford car communications manager.
Navarro said pricing on the system hasn't been determined yet, but he expects it to be part of a technology package available on the Fusion.
Inside Line says: The 2013 Ford Fusion uses safety as a selling point.

Will they offer the new Fusion with wood trim?

Now you can text, apply makeup, eat, fornicate, etc. and your car will do its best to ensure that you actually do what your life and those of others around you actually depends upon. How novel.

This a great feature for those who drive Expeditions, Escalades, Navigators or Yukons, and have a drifta-matic transmission installed. It can get dangerous to other drivers when these three ton SUV's randomly cross lanes, as their owners text message, talk on the phone, eat, and yell at the kids all while driving at 75mph.

Sounds like another cool piece of technology. But just like all of the other cool ideas, they are only as good as these roads are going to accomodate this technology. California is often a test spot for new technology but there roads are a long ways from being good enough for this technology, all of the way down to the dashed lines. If the lines were painted like they should be and roads were kept up like we are paying the to do, it would not be as hard to produce this type of technology. Too many variables.

All the idiots who won't use turn signals when lane changing are in for a big surprise! Still, this is technology I can do without.

I'm with you Throwback. Lincoln DESPERATELY needs a hit of a car to impress me, at least something with RWD that isn't so obviously badge engineered on the inside.

if you think about it, all cars nowadays always seem to be coming with a "find and tell" sytem for driving, and what is funny is that the cars i see that are purchased all have that as an option but the ones i see dont have them. so adding these features will cost more and could possibly decrease sales for the fusion. i mean the fusion is a great car and all but after buying all this crap on the car like these sytems when not standered...then just get a luxury car. i see why lincoln is not getting this stuff now.

Ford is really raising my expectations for Lincoln. Putting features in Fords, that were only available on top line luxury cars from just a few years ago makes me wonder what will be left for Lincoln. I am impressed with Ford's turn around especially in their cars, Lincoln has to have solid hits one after another to get on people's radar.

Excellent. It's so annoying when my car drifts as I'm napping.

While this is a nice feature to have, I hope that Ford starts with the basics since this feature is likely on just the fully loaded models - like the Camry XLE's optional blind spot monitoring.
Basics should be traction control, skid control, ABS, brake assist, and at least 10 airbags.
