DEARBORN, Michigan — Ford is hoping to jump-start the marketing and advertising effort for the 2010 Ford Fusion and Fusion Hybrid with a new contest that taps into the extensive power of Facebook and other social media sites. Fusion 41, the new consumer program, is enticing because the winner gets his or her Fusion paid off, and team members will win free gas for one year.

Applicants must have a current Facebook profile with a minimum of 100 friends and an active photo collection, Ford said in a statement — and they must also own a 2010 Fusion or Fusion Hybrid. To apply go to the Fusion 41 Web site until November 6.

Eight 2010 Fusion owners from around the U.S. will participate in Fusion 41. They will choose four people to join their team, and each team will be given a vehicle to drive in an auto relay race. Each team member must complete an assigned task, "tracking competitive variable such as miles driven, stops made or the number of passengers picked up," said Ford. Activities must be uploaded to social media sites, including Facebook.
