2002 Ford Focus ST170 Wagon
What's special about it?
Imagine what might happen if Ford's Special Vehicle Team (SVT) applied the SVT Focus hatchback's hardware to the regular Focus Wagon. The result would be what you see pictured here and what will be available in Europe soon.
The Focus ST170 Wagon has the 170-horsepower 2.0-liter engine, six-speed manual transmission, tweaked suspension and upgraded braking hardware from the SVT Focus in a sensible station wagon body style. It also gets better-bolstered seats up front to grip occupants enticed to exploit its impressive handling limits.
Finned 17-inch alloy wheels replace the five-spoke rims of the SVT Hatch, and there aren't any rocker panel extensions on the Wagon, which is just as well. We prefer a stealthier look...as if the station wagon body style weren't enough to disinterest the police, thieves and insurance companies.
The ST170 treatment can also be applied to the three- and five-door Focus hatchbacks.
Why should you care?
Product planners in North America don't believe you would buy one of these for $20,000. We think they're wrong. Don't you? Christian J. Wardlaw
