    What are they?
    2001 Ford Focus S2 and 2002 Focus ZX5

    What's special about them?
Ford adds yet another couple of Foci to its hot-selling small-car line: the '01 S2 and the '02 ZX5. S2 stands for "Street Edition/2" as Ford had the Street Edition last year and responded to requests for a three-door version with the new S2. This is the fourth in a series of special-edition Foci, following the Sony Limited Edition, Kona Mountain Bike Edition and the Street Edition.

The S2 features a unique front spoiler, rocker panels and rear spoiler, and will be offered in CD Silver, Sangria Red and S2-exclusive Liquid Grey. Under the hood is the same 130-horsepower 2.0-liter Zetec inline four found in the Focus ZX3 and ZTS. This is a good thing, as we have enjoyed this peppy performer in our long-term ZX3. A European-tuned suspension sports higher-rate springs, dampers and stabilizer bars than those in the ZX3, and the S2 rides on six-spoke 16-inch alloys with 205/50R16 Firestone Firehawks. Diamond-patterned sport seats and a six-disc in-dash CD changer are also standard. Though the S2 is referred to as an '01 model, it will not go on sale until this summer, which would make it more like an '02 model in our eyes.

The 2002 ZX5 is a five-door (hatchback) version of the Focus that is, in essence, a four-door version of the ZX3, since it shares that car's 130-horse Zetec engine and suspension tuning. This latest edition completes the Focus lineup, as there will be three-door, four-door, five-door and wagon versions available. A 60/40 split rear seat is standard and Ford's AdvanceTrac stability control system is optional.

    Why should you care?
The Focus is a very competent and popular car, and Ford covers all the bases by offering so many different versions of the car. Whether you're looking for a station wagon ideal for a small family, a mini-sport sedan or a sporty compact car that you can tweak and make your own ride, there's a fun Focus that should meet your needs and budget. — John DiPietro
