LOS ANGELES- Ford introduced a high-performance concept version of the Focus compact that will be replacing the Escort in the United States for the 2000 model year.
The Cosworth Focus concept, so named because of the cooperation between Cosworth and Ford in the development of the car, is aimed at the Southern California modified import market that is currently dominated by hopped-up Honda Civics and other small Japanese cars.
The modifications to the Focus include oversize alloy wheels and tires, aggressive bodyside cladding, a functional rear spoiler, and a turbocharged 200-horsepower version of Ford's ZTEC-E engine.
Ford wouldn't comment on whether the Cosworth Focus stood any chance of coming into production, hinting at the fact that they merely wanted to show what could be done with the flexible Focus platform. Nevertheless, we think that the model would slot in nicely as an entry-level Special Vehicle Team (SVT) vehicle.
