2008 Ford Expedition Funkmaster Flex Edition
What's special about it?
What's special about the 2008 Ford Expedition Funkmaster Flex edition that Ford will feature on its stand at the New York auto show? Well, it's an edition of the Ford Expedition SUV that hip-hop DJ and TV personality Funkmaster Flex has "touched down on." Duh!
Aston Taylor is his given name and Funkmaster Flex is his stage name, but the folks at Ford refer to him simply as "Flex." The company has had a relationship with, um, Flex for a couple of years now and anticipates that his projects will help Ford with "microsegmentation," which is apparently happening all over the place. Ford uses as its example Gatorade, of which there are many, many different varieties. Get it? There's a flavor for everyone and everyone has his own flavor. And Flex's flavor is big and red and black.
The Funkmaster Flex edition, which goes on sale this fall, is a largely cosmetic treatment. The powertrain is unchanged. But it's got chrome-clad 20-inch wheels, black-over-red two-tone paint, and a body kit including front and rear fascia plus rocker-sill skirts. The interior gets matching bright red trim, red stitching on the leather seats and comes with gobs of standard equipment.
We don't know how much it will cost. We don't know how many will be made. But we know that the Flex edition is more than just a paintjob. How do we know that? Because that's what Flex told us.
What's Edmunds' take?
Not our flavor of Gatorade. — Daniel Pund, Senior Editor, Detroit
