The new Ford Fiesta, the first major product of Ford's new global product development process, was designed in Europe and will be sold around the world, including North America by 2010. A previous version of the Fiesta was offered in the U.S. from 1978-'80.
"The new Ford Fiesta captures every aspect of what's defined Ford as a small-car leader in Europe and builds on it in terms of driving dynamics and design," said Mark Fields, president of the Americas, Ford Motor Company.
The new Fiesta is based on the Ford Verve Concept vehicles that debuted at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show and the 2007 Guangzhou Auto Show last fall, and the recent 2008 Detroit Auto Show. To Ford's credit, the transformation from concept to production car has done little to dull the car's striking lines.
Production of the European three- and five-door hatchback styles will begin in fall 2008.
What this means to you: Ford is finally getting its act together when it comes to delivering the same small car around the world. Too bad we won't know until 2010 if it was worth the wait. — Kelly Toepke, News Editor
