2008 British Auto Show: Ford Fiesta ECOnetic

LONDON — Lucky Britons will soon have a new high-mileage option available in the Ford Fiesta ECOnetic, which goes on sale in the U.K. by year-end, priced from $23,600.

The heart of the Fiesta ECOnetic is Ford's 1.6-liter four-cylinder TDCi turbodiesel engine, which is rated in the U.K. at the equivalent of U.S. 51 mpg in the city, 74 mpg on the highway and 64 mpg on the combined European driving cycle. The 89-hp engine also emits an ultra-low 98g/km of CO2.

To maximize fuel-efficiency, Ford engineers have performed a number of modifications and enhancements to the standard Fiesta. Rear air deflectors have been added, the suspension has been lowered and low-rolling-resistance tires have been fitted.

The diesel has been recalibrated and filled with low-friction oil, while the five-speed manual transmission’s final drive ratio has been altered from 3.37:1 to 3.05:1. A shift-indicator light on the instrument panel helps to optimize shift patterns.

The Fiesta ECOnetic edition will be offered in three- and five-door variants, joining the Mondeo ECOnetic and Focus ECOnetic in Ford’s European lineup.

What this means to you: Wonder when — or if — we'll get this one in the States. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
