2011 Ford F-150 To Claim Fuel-Efficiency Crown, Says Automaker

    Just the Facts:
    • Ford says its 2011 F-150 is on track to deliver best-in-class fuel economy.
    • Ford says the 3.7-liter V6-equipped 2011 F-150 is "projected" to deliver 16/23 mpg city/highway.
    • The EPA has yet to confirm the automaker's prediction.

DEARBORN, Michigan — Ford says its 2011 F-150 is poised to snatch the fuel-efficiency crown from competitors such as the 2011 Toyota Tundra. But the EPA has yet to post any fuel-efficiency numbers for the 2011 Ford F-150 on its Web site.

Ford said the 2011 F-150 with the new 3.7-liter V6 is "projected" to deliver 16 mpg in city driving and 23 mpg on the highway. Toyota said on its Web site that the 2011 Tundra with a 4.0-liter V6 gets an estimated 16 mpg in city driving and 20 mpg on the highway. The EPA has yet to rate the 2011 Tundra with a V6. A 2011 Dodge Ram 2WD with a 3.7-liter V6 gets 14 mpg in city driving and 20 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

Ford also said the new 5.0-liter V8 in the 2011 F-150 2WD is "projected" to deliver 15 mpg in city driving and 21 mpg on the highway. In comparison, a 2011 Dodge Ram 2WD with a 4.7-liter V8 delivers 14 mpg in city driving and 19 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. A 2011 Toyota Tundra 2WD with a 4.6-liter V8 delivers 15 mpg in city driving and 20 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

Ford is touting the F-150's estimated fuel economy numbers because, it said in a statement, "70 percent of F-150 customers said better fuel economy is what they'd like improved most in their truck."

Ford did not provide fuel economy numbers for the 2011 F-150 with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine. "Our EcoBoost truck, due out early next year, will establish a new benchmark for its combination of performance, capability and fuel-efficiency," said the automaker in a statement.

The AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report on Wednesday said the current average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline stands at $2.80 versus $2.47 a year ago. But that is still down from the high of $4.11 per gallon reported on July 17, 2008.

Ford===False Advertisement.  The only way you get 23mpg highway miles is to drive 50-55 with no air on.    I am only getting 17mpg and probably because I am like most people and drive 75 on the interstate.  If I slow down to 65 I might get 19mpg.   This is a bunch of crap and they should not be allowed to get away with it!!!!

Ford is full of crap!!!!  I have had a 2011 F150 since August and only bought it for the 23mpg highway miles and have yet to see above 17mpg.  If I drive 60 or 65 ALL the time it will get up to 19 but let's be realistic....who drives this on the interstate?   FALSE ADVERTISEMENT is all I have to say!!!!!!!!!!!   And yes I have complained all the way to corporate.   I guess you have to drive 50 or 55 to get the 23mpg they advertise and they know people don't drive that.  So that is why I say it is false advertisement.

The last 2 months I have been looking for a truck with good mpg for towing,i have a 2006 ford e350 superduty van,it says super duty right on it,from what I can see evrything on it is super duty.Guss what everything is havy duty but the 4 speed transmission which they use in a crown vic too,now I used to work for ford and should have known, this trans is also ina 2 wheel drive f250 I have ssen alot of burnt up ones.
Ford has had alot of issues with there 3 valve 5.4 too, spark plugs braking due to a skinnier new type plug, engine noises(cam phasers)and also the 2 valve 5.4,4.6,and 6.8 spir spark plugs out.I not sure I can beleive ther new MPG specs.
I have driven a 2011 ford f150 and a chevy 1500 the chevy felt better, but the ford was bigger inside,,my next stop is At Dodge to drive a Hemi, both chevy and dodge use cylinder deactivation and there engines are proven.Who do you beleive ????

So many experts putting their 2 cents in here and not one with enough balls to admit that Ford is kicking the crap out of all the competition for power and fuel economy. For the Dodge guy that got 21+ mpg with a hemi, was that with wind down hill and did you make it back before the tranny went out. For the Toyota guys, go drive a new F150 and you will quickly learn that the Toyota is no truck. Yes the F150 is big but even the smallest engine makes hp and torque that would kick the most powerful engine in any manufacturers truck a couple of years ago and moves that truck like crazy(check you tube). The new ford engines are amazing, best thing you can do is forget about the displacement and look at performance numbers. CID is no longer relevant and Ford quality is second to no one

2011 Tundra will have "Fuel Efficiency Crown" snatched by FORD with it's V6! Hmmmmm this will have to be studied more!!  Tundra will have to go on an anti -obesity diet before any claims for efficiency can be made!

Ford is in the same boat with a huge heavy truck and V6 combo looking for 23mpg highway going downhill  with the 6 speed tranny and no headwinds! Real life driving this ain't happening!
Sooooo much marketing bull going on  !!!!

In the future look for "SOME COMPANY" to present a nice sensible smaller truck package to offer ease of parking, ease of entry, ease of over the side loading and much higher attainable fuel efficiency with these higher technology drivetrains!!

17/23? Really? That's what Ford said? I do believe Ford needs to check it's statements when they released on their website it would be more like 14/19. If you don't believe me, watch the video on the 3.7. Small print near the end.

No such thing as 4.0 liter V8 on a Tundra

Eh?  Do you mean the 4.0 liter V8?

And I'm guessing the "Fuel efficiency crown" is for full size pickups only.  Otherwise, I would advise Ford to sell their upcoming redesigned Ranger here in the States, as I'm sure that would get better mileage, being as it's supposed to be smaller and all.  Plus, it's a pretty slick looking truck and would rival (possibly better?) the Tacoma.

@northsparrow, talk to your congressman. The amount of regulation on diesel motors would make a light duty diesel cost around $5k more than a comparable gas engine. No one would buy it and thats why no one sells them.
