WASHINGTON — Ford is recalling 16,091 2011-'12 trucks, including the 2011 Ford F-150, because of a brake shift interlock switch problem, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. A stop-sale order was issued on December 6.

    The recall also includes the 2012 Ford F-250, 2012 Ford F-350, 2012 Ford F-450 and 2012 Ford F-550.

"The transmission can be shifted out of the park position without pressing the brake pedal due to (a) brake shift interlock switch problem," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "This will allow the operator to inadvertently shift the vehicle into gear without the brake pedal being depressed, increasing the risk of a crash or injury to a nearby pedestrian."

Ford said it notified dealers on December 6 to stop demonstrating or delivering the affected vehicles until inspections are performed and switches are replaced, according to documentation filed with the federal safety agency.

As of November 29, Ford said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the defect.

Ford dealers will replace the switch. The recall is expected to begin on December 19. Owners can contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.

Inside Line says: If you own one of the aforementioned Ford trucks, be aware that a recall is in the works.
