It's a Mixed Bag for 2009 Ford F-150 in Federal Crash Tests

WASHINGTON — The redesigned 2009 Ford F-150 has scored top five-star ratings in newly released federal crash tests for front and side impact. But the truck earned four stars in rollover testing on the two-wheel-drive model and just three stars in rollover tests on the four-wheel-drive model, according to Safecar.gov.

In comparison, the 2008 Ford F-150 earned four stars in the four-wheel-drive rollover test.

The F-150's closest competitor, the redesigned 2009 Dodge Ram, also earned three stars in the four-wheel-drive rollover test. The Ram also scored five stars in front driver and passenger crash tests. It has not yet been tested for side impact results. Like the F-150, the Ram earned four stars in two-wheel-drive model rollover testing.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says a five-star rating equals a 10 percent or lower chance of serious injury in a crash, while four stars equal an 11-20 percent chance of serious injury. A three-star rating translates to a 21-35 percent chance of serious injury in a crash.
