    What's Special About It?

Ford coined the sport-utility truck segment nearly five years ago with the Explorer Sport Trac. That model has received no notable changes since its inception, but now an Explorer Sport Trac concept truck arrives as a precursor to the 2007 production makeover. The Sport Trac concept brings both fresher styling and advanced technology.

A lowered front and rear fascia and a wider, longer stance combined with 21-inch 10-spoke aluminum wheels offer less off-road appearance and more street rod image. Off-white Moonlight paint and polished aluminum trim bits illuminate the sleek new exterior lines. A light blue and navy blue interior scheme complements the exterior color, featuring four captain's chairs and a single oval instrument panel. Ford says this new look could become a new special edition.

Underneath the fancy paint job is a 4.6-liter V8 engine, an all-new independent rear suspension and a Ford-developed roll stability control system which originally debuted on the 2003 Volvo XC90. This new system is expected to eventually make its way through the Ford truck lineup. Along with the new look and underpinnings, the Sport Trac's overall functionality has improved, largely due to a 30-percent larger cargo bed.

    What's Edmunds' Take?

With other new sport-utility trucks on the horizon, including Honda's new Ridgeline SUT which also debuts at the North American International Auto Show, it is imperative that Ford update the aging Sport Trac to remain competitive.
