Ford Recalls 2008 Edge, Lincoln MKX for Potential Fire Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Ford Motor Co. is recalling 142 of its 2008 Edge and Lincoln MKX all-wheel-drive vehicles to fix a fuel tank weld problem which could result in a fire. The recall is small but noteworthy, since it comes at a critical juncture for the Dearborn automaker as it struggles to maintain its footing and quality standards in trying financial times.

The Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX are two of the automaker's newest offerings and are key to the long-term health of the company.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said the recall centers around a fuel tank weld fixture which may have been exposed to a contaminant during production. This could cause a dimple in the bottom of the fuel tank at a spot weld, according to NHTSA's recalls summary of the problem. "This dimple could result in a fuel leak or a fuel drip from the tank," said NHTSA. "Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire."

Dealers will inspect and replace the fuel tank free of charge. The recall is expected to kick off sometime in July. Owners can contact Ford at (866) 437-7332.

What this means to you: If you own one of the aforementioned vehicles, better have it checked out with your dealer ASAP. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
