DETROIT — Ford took the wraps off its Fusion-inspired 2007 Edge crossover, which goes on sale at the end of 2006. Key details on the new crossover include optional all-wheel drive, an optional panoramic roof, factory-installed Sirius Satellite Radio, and an MP3 audio jack.

The Edge, built in Oakville, Ontario, is equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 that makes 250 horsepower at 6,250 rpm and 240 pound-feet of torque at 4,500 rpm. It is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The Edge, which borrows the Fusion sedan's three-bar grille, rides on a 111.2-inch wheelbase and measures 185.7 inches in overall length.

Ford says standard equipment includes antilock brakes, a spoiler, remote keyless entry, manual air conditioning, power locks, and an AM/FM/CD player with four speakers.

What this means to you: Ford makes another pass at the booming crossover market, with a vehicle that appears to outshine its Freestyle model in terms of horsepower and looks.
