    What is it?
    Ford Desert Excursion

    What's special about it?
Move over Hummer. The ultimate go-anywhere, do-anything vehicle has arrived...at least as a concept vehicle. Based on the Super Duty F-Series platform, this take-no-prisoners concept combines the power and flexibility for the commercial-use customer, the ruggedness of extreme off-roading and the refinement and comfort for a trip to the opera. The Desert Excursion can plow through nearly any obstacle in its path, thanks to a 6.8-liter SOCH V10 engine producing 310 horsepower and 425 foot-pounds of torque. The concept also features a unique grille, front fascia and headlamps that are made out of stronger, more durable materials. The same ruggedness is carried into the interior with weatherproof leather seating for six, heavy-duty rubber floor mats and leather grab handles mounted to aluminum tubing.

    Why should you care?
With the popularity of specialty SUVs (like the Nissan Xterra and Hummer) on the climb, it's only a matter of time before more "can do" vehicles appear. The Desert Excursion successfully melds the ruggedness of a Baja 1000 racer with the utility of a work truck and family hauler. While this is one of the more interesting SUV hybrids to come out of Ford's design studios, don't expect to see it in showrooms any time soon.
