MONTEREY, California — The impressive lineup is set for the Dan Gurney Tribute at the 2010 Rolex Motorsports Reunion. It includes 24 cars, including the red Number 1 Ford Mk IV that Gurney and A.J. Foyt drove to victory in the 1967 Le Mans 24 Hour Race.
Other notable vehicles include the dark blue Eagle Gurney-Weslake V12, no. 36, that is the inspiration for the 2010 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion event poster and an "unconventional" yellow 1981 Eagle with a Chevrolet stock block engine, said the show organizers.
"I am both humbled and blown away by what the Motorsports Reunion Management is putting together at Mazda Raceway," said Gurney in a statement on Wednesday. "To see so many of the cars we have built over the last four decades assembled in one place is an occasion for celebration."
Show organizers said picking the lineup was "quite a challenging task," given that Gurney drove more than 50 different types of cars in 312 events worldwide and that his All American Racers Team designed, built and campaigned 157 racing cars with 66 different drivers behind the wheel during 35 years of competition.
Gurney, 79, is an American racing legend and the first driver to win races in Formula 1, NASCAR and IndyCar. He is lauded in Wikipedia for his "exceptionally fluid driving style." The exhibition will feature a sample of vehicles from his career, including Formula 1, NASCAR, Indy, Trans Am, Can-Am, Formula Ford and Formula 5000.
Other highlights of the Gurney tribute will include the cult classic "Cuda," one of three five-liter Plymouth Barracudas built and campaigned by AAR on the Trans Am circuit in 1970; a 1960 Birdcage Maserati Tipo 61 that competed in the FIA World Sports Car Championship and the white Olsonite no. 6 Indy Eagle that won the USAC Championship with Bobby Unser in 1974.
The Gurney tribute is part of the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, August 13-15 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. More than 600 historic racing cars from 13 countries will compete in 19 groups at the event.
